The Mayflower has landed and you can make your own set of Pilgrims (dolls) from bias tape!! All you need is strips of bias tape, a styrofoam ball, some felt and a few miscellaneous decorations for this cute couple!!

Add some fruit, leaves and vines, and create a centerpiece for the coffee table or the mantle.

MATERIALS (enough for one man and one woman):
6 pkgs. Wrights® Mocha Wide Single Fold Bias Tape (#117-202-765)
12" Wrights® 1/4" Black Satin Ribbon (#223-121-031)
1 9" x 11" White Felt
1 5" x 5" White Felt
1 3" x 4" Black Felt
1 2" x 1" Yellow Felt
2 2" Styrofoam Ball
1 Mini Basket
-- Assorted Berries and Dried Flowers
-- Fabric Glue
-- String

INSTRUCTIONS (for woman doll):

  1. Open 2 packages of bias tape and cut each piece into six 18" pieces for a total of 12.
  2. Center one strip of bias tape over the styrofoam ball. Wrap the bias tape around the ball to the underside and hold ends together firmly.
  3. Continue to apply strips of tape to ball until entire ball is covered and all strips are used (see illustration 1).
  4. Tie off all ends with a piece of string. This is your pilgrim's head.
  5. Cut remaining package of bias tape into twelve 9" pieces.
  6. Align ten pieces of bias tape together and bind each end with a piece of string (see illustration 2). These are the pilgrim's arms.
  7. Separate the 12 pieces of bias tape under the ball into two equal groups, front and back.

  8. Insert the arms between the groups of tape. Guide the arms up to within 2" from the head.
  9. Tie under the arms with a piece of string to secure arms in place. This is the doll waist (see illustration 2).
  10. Trim neck, wrists and waist of doll with final piece of bias tape (see photo).
  11. Cut apron, hat and collar from white felt using pattern.
  12. Fold hat and glue to head.
  13. Glue apron and collar together and then glue to doll.
  14. Glue basket into arms and decorate with berries and dried flowers.
  15. Enjoy!
 INSTRUCTIONS (for man doll):
  1. Follow instructions 1 - 9 for bias tape pilgrim woman.
  2. Separate ends of bias tape into 2 equal bunches, side by side. Tie ends of bias tape with string to form two legs.
  3. Trim waist, neck, wrists and ankles with bias tape.
  4. Cut collar from white felt using pattern and glue to doll.
  5. Cut 2 buckles from yellow felt using pattern.
  6. Cut hat from black felt using pattern. Roll rectangular piece of black felt into a tube and glue. Glue felt tube to felt circle for top hat. Decorate front of hat with buckle. Glue hat to pilgrim.
  7. Tie a bow around neck of pilgrim.
  8. Enjoy!
NOTE: (You may choose to attach the dolls to a dowel and mount to a stand. Once dolls are secured, decorate the base with leaves and dried flowers)
