Beginner to Intermediate
Stitches Used: Single Crochet; Slip Stitch; Half Double Crochet

Here's an easy project for the beginning crocheter. It can be done in no time and the design uses less than one 3 oz. skein of white, red, and green yarn.

MATERIALS:
1 Boye® Crochet Hook Size H (#6218-H)
1 3 oz. Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply Knitting Worsted Weight Yarn (White)
-- Scrap Yarn (Black, Red, Orange, Green, Brown)
3 1/4" Tinsel Pompoms by Fibre Craft
-- Craft Batting by Fairfield
1 12" Red Chenille Stem
1 Boye® Yarn Needle
-- Glue Gun
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Rd 1: With white yarn, ch 2 (counts as first sc), 4 sc in 2nd chain from hook, join with sl st in first sc, turn. (5 sc)
  • Rd 2: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc in same stitch as sl st in previous row, 2 sc in each st around row, join with sl st in first sc, turn. (10 sc)
  • Rd 3: Repeat Rd 2 and turn (20 sc).
  • Rd 4: Repeat Rd 2 and turn (40 sc).
  • Rd 5 & 6: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc around, join with sl st in first sc, turn (40 sc).
  • Rd 7: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st around, join with sl st in first hdc, turn (40 hdc).
  • Rd 8: Rep row 7, turn (40 hdc).
  • Rd 9: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), skip next st, sc in next (skip eos) around row, join with sl st in first sc, turn (20 sc).
  • Begin stuffing bottom.
  • Rd 10: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc around row, join with sl st in first sc, turn (20 sc).
  • Rd 11: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in same st, skip next st, 2 hdc in eos around row, join with sl st in first hdc, turn (20 hdc).
  • Rd 12 & 13: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work even in hdc, join with sl st in first hdc, turn (20 hdc).
  • Stuff middle.
  • Rd 14: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc around row, join with sl st in first sc, turn (20 sc).
  • Rd 15: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work even in hdc, join with sl st in first hdc, turn (20 hdc).
  • Rd 16: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in eos, join with a sl st in first hdc, turn (10 hdc).
  • Stuff head.
  • Rd 17: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc in eos. End work, tuck in end.

    HAT

  • Rd 1: Ch 2 (counts as first sc), 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st in first sc (6 sc).
  • Rd 2: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc in ea st, join with sl st in first sc (6sc).
  • Rd 3: Repeat Rd 2.
  • Rd 4: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), 2 sc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * join with sl st in first sc (9 sc).
  • Rd 5: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc around row, join with sl st in first sc (9 sc).
  • Rd 6 & 7: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), 2 sc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc. End work. Use starting tail to stuff hat, use tail end to secure hat to head where desired. Push point down into hat as shown.

    ARMS

  • Ch 6, work 2 hdc into last st for hand. End work. Tuck in ends and secure in place by tying into sides of body and tucking in ends. Make second hand.

    EYES

  • Thread black yarn on needle, insert from under hat at back to front where eyes will be, make loop, pass thru 2 times to make a knot and go back thru and hide end under hat.

    MOUTH

  • Thread yarn needle with red and take 3 back stitches and tuck in ends.

    NOSE

  • Ch 2 with orange, turn, sl st in 1 st, end work and attach with yarn needle on face and tuck in ends.

    BUTTONS

  • Make same as for eyes.

    SCARF

  • Ch 38 with red yarn. Add green to make ch 1, and sc across row, leave ends. Cut two pieces, 6" long of red & green yarn and larkshead 1 of each color at each end of scarf, including original ends. Tie around neck.
  • Bend chenille stem into a triangle for handle and oblong for bottom of shovel (see photo). Use hot glue and tack ends of shovel in place, and glue tinsel pompoms in place on hat. Tack arms and scarf ends in place, if desired.
