This project is especially good for hand and eye coordination. To make, you need to string small seed beads onto a wire and keep count to achieve the right effect. When done, this project looks like the expensive accessories for hair and jewelry which are now so popular in ready to wear!

Make several and choose colors to match all your spring outfits. Use them as hair accessories, put them on a pin back and attach them to your clothes, back pack, or purse.

Butterfly Clip
MATERIALS:
12" Wrights® 7/8" Single Face Satin Ribbon (#223725 color of your choice)
8 E Beads (green or blue)
6 Seed Beads (green or blue)
1 spl. 26 Gauge Green Craft Wire
-- Hot Glue Gun and Glue
-- Hair Clip with Plastic Bar
-- Needle and Thread
-- Hot Glue Gun
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Cut one 18" piece of craft wire and fold in half.
  2. Feed one seed bead onto wire and guide down to fold. Pinch wire (illustration 1).
  3. Feed 3 seed beads onto both wires (illustration 2).
  4. Feed 7 E beads onto both wires (illustration 3).
  5. Feed a final E bead onto both wires.
  6. Feed one seed bead onto each wire for eyes.
  7. Guide the ends of the wire around the final E bead, through the bottom opening and out through the top to create antennas (illustration 4).
  8. Pull wire tightly so that all beads are close together.
  9. Curl wire around a craft needle or nail to form antennas (illustration 5). Set butterfly body aside.
  10. Cut one 5 1/2" and one 6 1/2" piece of ribbon.
  11. Overlap ribbon ends 1/2" and glue in place to create a ribbon ring (illustration 6). Repeat for second piece of ribbon. Set aside to dry.
  12. Fold each ribbon ring in half and pinch in the middle to form butterfly wings.
  13. Align larger wings over smaller wings (illustration 7).
  14. Tie off wings with a piece of wire.
  15. Glue or sew body to wings.
  16. Hot glue butterfly to hair clip.
  17. Enjoy!

Dragonfly Clip
MATERIALS:
14" Wrights® 3/8" Double Face Satin Ribbon (#223721 color of your choice)
8 E Beads (green or blue)
15 Seed Beads (green or blue)
1 spl. 26 Gauge Green Craft Wire
1 Hair Clip with Plastic Bar
-- Needle and Thread
-- Hot Glue Gun
INSTRUCTIONS:
Follow the directions for the butterfly with these alterations:

  • Cut the ribbon into two 7" pieces. The wings will be the same size.
  • For the body, feed the first bead on and pinch (illustration 1).
  • Feed 12 seed beads, 7 E beads and a final E bead.
  • After guiding the wire through the final E bead, add two seed beads for eyes.
  • Finish antennas for dragonfly as you did with butterfly.
  • Enjoy!
