INSTRUCTIONS:
(Gauge: 5 sts = 1"; 8 rows = 1")
PATTERN NOTE: When picking up a loop in horizontal st, insert hook under top loop only.
- Row 1: With MC ch 37; working through back loop only, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and draw through, * insert hook in back loop of next ch, yo and draw through, repeat from * across foundation ch, leaving all loops on hook. Slide all stitches to opposite end of hook and turn (37 loops on hook).
- Row 2: To work loops off hook, place CC on hook with slip knot, working from left to right draw through first loop, * yo, draw through 2 loops (1 loop of each color). Repeat from * across until there is 1 loop left on hook. DO NOT TURN.
- Row 3: To pick up loops, with CC and working right to left, ch 1, skip first vertical bar, * pick up loop in next horizontal stitch, pick up loop under next vertical bar, skip next vertical bar, repeat from * across. Slide all stitches to opposite end of hook and turn (37 loops on hook).
- Row 4: Pick up MC, yo and pull through one loop, * yo and pull through two loops (one of each color). Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook. DO NOT TURN.
- Row 5: Repeat row 3 using MC.
- Row 6: Repeat row 4 using CC.
- Row 7: Repeat row 3.
- Row 8: Repeat row 4.
- Row 9: With MC and working right to left, ch 1, skip first two vertical bars, * pick up loop in next horizontal st, pick up loop under next vertical bar, skip next vertical bar, repeat from * across skipping last two horizontal sts. Slide all stitches to opposite end of hook and turn (35 loops on hook).
- Row 10: Repeat row 6.
- Row 11: Repeat row 9 using CC (33 loops on hook).
- Row 12: Repeat row 4.
- Rows 13-34: Repeat rows 9-12 (11 loops on hook at end of row 33).
- Rows 35-58: Repeat rows 3-6 working evenly on 11 loops.
- Row 59: With CC and working right to left ch 1, skip first vertical bar (pick up loop in next horizontal st, pick up loop under next vertical bar, skip next vertical bar) 2 times, yo, skip next vertical bar, (pick up loop in next horizontal st, pick up loop under next vertical bar, skip next vertical bar) 2 times, pick up loop in last horizontal st (11 loops on hook).
- Row 60: Repeat row 4.
- Row 61: Repeat row 9 (9 loops on hook).
 - Row 62: Repeat row 10.
- Row 63: Repeat row 11 (7 loops on hook).
- Row 64: Repeat row 12.
- Row 65: Bind off in the following manner: Ch 1, sl st in each horizontal st across, fasten off.
Edging:
- With predominantly MC side facing and using standard hook, join MC in end of row 3 with a sl st, hdc around curved edges working evenly so piece lays flat, fasten off.
Finishing:
- Cut towel in half. Fold towel to measure 8 1/4" wide, centering design. To control fraying, work buttonhole stitch along cut edge of towel or machine zig-zag. Place beginning ch along top of towel covering cut edge and backstitch in place with sewing thread. Sew button to the center of row 18.
