If you're a crocheter (or want to be one) here is the neatest way to use your craft for Christmas. A few spools of crochet thread and you can do a whole tree full of jackets for your existing glass ornaments. Or, if you have some of the ornaments that are wound with fibre and it is coming undone, this is a way to save them!

A few minutes with a crochet hook and adding a sheer bow on an old ornament will change the whole look to a totally handmade one!!

If you're not already a crocheter, not to worry - you can teach yourself how. Just get the Boye® Needle "I Taught Myself to Crochet" book with step by step instructions and full photos and illustrations!

MATERIALS:
1 Boye® Steel Crochet Hook (size 5) (#6208-5)
1 yd. Wrights® Sheer embroidered ribbon (#222-285-044)
1 spl. Size 10 Crochet Thread
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Round 1: Chain 6. Slip stitch in first chain to form ring. Chain 1, 12 single crochets in ring. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet.
  • Round 2: Chain 1, single crochet in same stitch as joining slip stitch on previous round. Chain 7, slip stitch in single crochet just made, single crochet in next 2 stitches. *Chain 7, slip stitch in last single crochet made, single crochet in next 2 stitches. Repeat from * 3 more times. Chain 7, slip stitch in last single crochet made, single crochet in next stitch. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet (6 chain 7 loops).
  • Round 3: * 9 single crochets in chain 7 loop. Repeat from * around. Slip stitch in joining slip stitch of previous round. Do not turn.
  • Round 4: Slip stitch in next 5 stitches. Chain 1, single crochet in same stitch, chain 6. *Skip next 8 stitches, single crochet in next stitch, chain 6. Repeat from * 4 more times. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet. Do not turn.
  • Round 5: Chain 1. *6 single crochets in next chain space. Repeat from * 5 more times. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet.
  • Round 6: Chain 5, double crochet, chain 2, double crochet, chain 2, double crochet in same stitch as joining slip stitch in previous row, chain 1. *Skip next 5 stitches, in next stitch double crochet (chain 2, double crochet) 3 times, chain 1. Repeat from * 4 more times, chain 1, join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain 5. Do not turn.
  • Round 7: Slip stitch in next 3 stitches and in chain 2 space, chain 6, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet in same chain 2 space. Chain 1 *skip next 2 chain 2 spaces, in next chain 2 space double crochet (chain 3, double crochet) 3 times, chain 1. Repeat from * 4 more times. Chain 1, join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain 6.
  • Round 8: Slip stitch in next 4 stitches and in chain 3 space. Chain 6, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet in same chain 3 space. Chain 2, *skip next 2 chain 3 spaces. In next chain 3 space (double crochet, chain 3) 3 times, double crochet, chain 2. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain 6.
  • Round 9: Slip stitch in next 4 stitches and in chain 3 space. Chain 6, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet, chain 3, double crochet in same chain 3 space. Chain 3, *skip next 2 chain 3 spaces. In next chain 3 space (double crochet, chain 3) 3 times, double crochet. Chain 3. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain 6.
  • Round 10: Slip stitch in next 4 stitches and in chain 3 space. Chain 5, double crochet, chain 8, double crochet, chain 2, double crochet in same chain 3 space. Chain 3. *skip next 3 chain 3 spaces. In next chain 3 space, double crochet, chain 2, double crochet, chain 8, double crochet, chain 2, double crochet. Chain 3. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain 5. Finish off.
  • Place the finished jacket over the ball ornament, spreading the jacket so it is evenly covering all sides.
  • Thread the ribbon through the last crocheted loops and tighten around neck of ball.
  • Tie ribbon in a decorative bow, leaving long tails.
  • Hang on tree and Enjoy!
