Samples of Hem Facing end usesHem Facing closeup Applying Hem Facing

Hem facings: Bias Hem Facing (Item # 117-100, wide single fold bias tape) and Flexi Lace Hem Facing (Item #117-306, wide lace), are used primarily when you are turning a hem down and don't have enough fabric to properly face it.

They are the perfect "cheaters", providing just the right amount of facing to make the hem look right. They can also be used if you've only got a certain amount of fabric to make a garment and have to cut the hem a little short, by providing the perfect extension to your fabric!

What's Great About Hem Facing?

  • It's already biased
  • It's pre-made and ready to use
  • It's 1 7/8" wide
  • It's available in 8 neutral colors (lights and darks)
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Remove hem facing from card.
  2. Unfold one long edge of hem facing and lightly press flat with a warm iron. Do not press out fold completely.
  3. Cut hem facing 3/4" wider than hem.
  4. On wrong side of tape, fold back 1 edge 3/4". This is the beginning edge, and will make a clean finish when turned up.
  5. Position ironed edge of hem facing along bottom of hem, right sides together. (The second edge remains raw and goes over the turned back one).
  6. Stitch hem facing in place along the fold line. HINT: Sewing along a folded line is called "stitching in the ditch".
  7. Turn hem along sewn edge to wrong side of garment, and press.
  8. Stitch using hem stitch on machine or by hand tacking.
  9. Enjoy!

What's Great About Flexi-Lace Hem Facing?
  • It's ready to use, finished on both edges.
  • It's 1 3/4" wide
  • It's available in 8 neutral colors (lights and darks)
  • It can be used as an insertion lace, as a trimming, or for shoe laces, hair ties and bows.
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Remove lace from card.
  2. Position over raw edge of hem, right sides together.
  3. Stitch at edge, matching edge in a 1/4" seam, overlapping at the end 1/2".
  4. Turn hem up to wrong side of garment. Press.
  5. Stitch using a blind hem stitch on machine or tack by hand.
  6. Enjoy!
